AI Visibility: Audit, Answer Checks & Query Fan-Out Report
Updated July 13, 2026 · Adam Yong
What is AI Visibility?
AI Visibility is a set of three tools that show you where AI search engines (Google’s AI Overviews and ChatGPT) mention your site, and help you win the questions where you are missing. Each tool works at a different zoom level:
| Tool | Zoom level | The question it answers |
|---|---|---|
| AI Visibility Audit | Your site | Where does AI already mention or link to my site? |
| AI Answer Check | One question | What does AI actually say for this exact question, and am I in it? |
| Query Fan-Out Report | One topic | Across everything AI answers around this keyword, where am I missing and what should I write? |
They work as a funnel: the Audit shows you where you stand, an Answer Check zooms into a single question, and a Fan-Out Report maps a whole topic and hands you ready-to-use article outlines for the gaps.
Benefits: Why Use It?
- See the truth, not a score. Every result comes from a real, observed AI answer. Citation figures are shown as counts (e.g. cited 2/3 samples) with dates, and every row links to a live search you can run yourself to verify.
- Find competitor gaps. The Audit and the matrix show searches where a competitor is cited and you are not. Those are your highest-value targets.
- Capture the real query fan-out. When someone asks AI a question, it quietly fires a set of related searches behind the scenes and picks its sources from those results. The Fan-Out Report captures ChatGPT’s actual searches word for word, plus Google’s People Also Ask. These are observed queries, not AI-invented keyword ideas.
- Go straight from gap to article. Each Fan-Out Report groups the questions into article plans (one article per intent cluster) with an outline you can paste directly into the writer.
Important Note
- AI answers change between runs. This is normal, especially for ChatGPT. That is why we sample multiple times and show frequencies (cited 2/3) instead of a single yes/no.
- “ChatGPT (web search)” uses the same models and search backend as consumer ChatGPT, but it is an API approximation, not the literal app (no personalization or memory).
- “No AIO” on a row means Google showed no AI Overview for that query in your chosen location when we checked. That is useful data too: there is nothing to be cited in yet.
- Some ChatGPT fan-out queries start with site:. That is ChatGPT looking inside a specific website while researching. We show them exactly as fired for full transparency.
- No tool can guarantee a citation. These tools show you what AI systems actually cite today so you can improve your citation readiness.
Step-by-Step Guide
Step 1: Run an AI Visibility Audit (your starting point)
- Go to Tools → AI Visibility.
- Click New Audit, enter your domain, pick your country and language. Optionally add one competitor domain.
- The results show every keyword where your domain appears as an AI Overview citation (with search volume and the cited URL), plus where ChatGPT cites or mentions you.
- On any interesting keyword row, click Check this question (runs an Answer Check) or Map this topic (runs a Fan-Out Report).
Step 2: Check a single question with an AI Answer Check
- Open the AI Answer Checks tab and click New Answer Check.
- Enter the question, your domain and brand name (for cited/mentioned verdicts), location and language, and how many samples per engine.
- The result shows: a verdict per engine (cited / mentioned / not cited, with sample counts), the AI answers as observed, a unified cited-sources table, sources cited by both engines (your strongest models for what to cover), and the claims that repeat across answers.
- Use the verification buttons to run the same search yourself on Google or ChatGPT.
Step 3: Map a topic with a Query Fan-Out Report
- Open the Query Fan-Out Reports tab and click New Fan-Out Report.
- Enter a seed keyword you want traffic for, plus your domain, brand, and optionally a competitor. Tick “Also check ChatGPT for every question” (+1 credit) if you want fresh per-question ChatGPT verdicts; without it, the ChatGPT column uses your latest Audit data.
- The report shows:
- ChatGPT fan-out, exactly as captured: every search ChatGPT fired for your seed, word for word.
- Coverage matrix: each related question with AIO exists, search volume, whether you (and your competitor) are cited, and the top cited source.
- Content plan: questions grouped into article clusters. Where you are absent or weak, you get a suggested article title and a full outline.
- Click Copy Outline on any cluster card.
Step 4: Write the article
- Open Advanced Mode (or Bulk Advanced).
- Paste the copied outline into the Custom Outline field and write as usual. The outline format (numbered headings, ”-” subheadings, [Table]/[List] markers) is already writer-ready.
FAQs
What is “query fan-out”?
When you ask AI a question, it does not run just one search. It quietly fires a set of related searches and builds its answer from those results. Being visible for your main keyword is no longer enough; AI picks its sources question by question across the fan-out.
Where do the sub-queries in the report come from?
From observation: ChatGPT’s real search activity for your seed (captured word for word), Google’s People Also Ask, related searches, and your Search Console queries when connected. The AI only fills small intent gaps, and those rows are labeled “added for intent coverage”.
Why does the ChatGPT column say “audit data from [date]”?
Without the live ChatGPT add-on, that column is filled from your most recent AI Visibility Audit, which uses a database of real ChatGPT conversations. It is free but a few days older. Enable the add-on for fresh, per-question results.
Why do I see “No AIO” on some rows?
Google showed no AI Overview for that query in your location when we sampled it. Queries starting with site: almost never trigger one.
Why are results different when I re-run the same report?
AI answers genuinely vary between runs, and ChatGPT may fan out differently each time. That is real behavior, not an error. Citation figures always show how many of the collected samples a source appeared in.
How many credits does each tool cost?
AI Visibility Audit: 1 credit (+1 with a competitor). AI Answer Check: 1 credit for 3 samples per engine, 2 credits for 6. Query Fan-Out Report: 1 credit, +1 with live ChatGPT sampling.
